Help Shape OCRW's Future in 2027

Published on 7/22/2026

OCRW is preparing for its October elections and planning for the year ahead. Several board and volunteer positions will be available in 2027, including three board seats.

Serving OCRW does not have to mean taking on everything alone. Each role has a defined area of responsibility, and board members work together to support the organization, its programs, and its members. Some positions require a few hours each week, while others involve a more modest commitment at certain times of the year.

Whether you are interested in serving on the board, coordinating a program, hosting an activity, or helping OCRW connect with the wider writing community, there are many ways to contribute. Please review the opportunities below and consider where your skills, experience, or interests might be a good fit.

All board seats are elected in October. The three marked Open have no continuing officer and are our most urgent need for 2027.

Every board member attends the monthly general meeting (one Saturday/month) and the monthly board meeting (one Thursday evening/month, currently 6:00–8:00 pm). Beyond that:

President (Open for 2027) — Oversee general administration, arrange and lead general and board meetings, support other board members in their duties (1–2 hours/week). Diplomatic, effective organizer.

VP Communications (Open for 2027) — Create and send the monthly newsletter and essential emails, manage social media, and maintain the website (3–4 hours/week). Graphic designer, strong writer.

VP Programs (Open for 2027) — Find, contract, and manage speakers for monthly meetings (1 hour/week). Resourceful self-starter.

Secretary — Record the monthly board meetings (1 hour/week). Diligent, detail-oriented documenter.

Treasurer — Manage incoming membership and meeting payments; manage the budget and finances (1 hour/week). Comfortable with spreadsheets and numbers. OCRW retains an outside accountant.

Membership Director — Track and record membership information and payments; organize room setup and teardown at in-person events, with volunteer help (1 hour/week). Energetic event coordinator.

Non-Board Positions (a modest investment at various times of year):

Hearts in Ink Contest Coordinator — Promote the contest with VP Communications, manage submissions and judges, assign books, record scores, and create finalist and winner lists (January, March, June, September). Strong organizer.

Community Liaison — Build relationships with bookstores and community partners to arrange signings and speaking engagements (intermittent). Resourceful self-starter.

Book Club, Write-Ins & Small-Group Hosts — Schedule and host activities on Zoom and promote them with VP Communications (monthly, under an hour plus the activity). Energetic coordinator.

OCRW Online Class Coordinator — Solicit and contract instructors for short 2–6 week courses (intermittent). Resourceful self-starter.

Webmaster — Update the site as needed, coordinating with board members and volunteers for content and graphics (several times a month). Web and graphics proficient.
